New footpath on the riverside
A footpath has been reinstated on the riverside between Bulcote and Gunthorpe. The path starts at a dyke crossing on the riverside path at the junction of Bulcote and Gunthorpe parishes, goes north eastwards across a field to reach a newly installed bridge over a drainage dyke, alongside fencing around Lowdham Leisureworld, passing one of the fishing lakes and comes out on the A6097 road at a point where there is a pedestrian refuge to enable you to cross the road. You can then proceed through another part of this old footpath on the opposite side of the road into Gunthorpe.
This footpath disappeared during sand and gravel extraction in this area in the 1950s and was never reinstated after the work finished. Reinstatement has been made by Nottinghamshire County Council following a claim, based on historical evidence researched by Julie during BJRA’s Riverside Project, made in 2004.
This is a very useful alternative route into Gunthorpe especially when the other public footpath under Gunthorpe Bridge is inaccessible when the level of the River Trent is high.
Many thanks to Nottinghamshire County Council for their work in supporting this claim and reinstating the path.
